Ajla Tomljanović withdraws from United Cup match with injury

Ajla Tomljanović has withdrawn from her United Cup group stage match with Great Britain’s Harriet Dart, citing a left knee injury.

The 29-year-old will be replaced by Australian team member Maddison Inglis for tonight’s game, scheduled for 5:30 pm (AEDT).

Tomljanović now joins Nick Kyrgios as the second Australian to pull out of the inaugural tennis tournament, although it is not clear whether she will return for her nation’s second group tie against Spain.

Australia began their United Cup campaign on Thursday evening with two defeats to Group D challengers Great Britain.

Alex de Minaur was thrust into the top role following Kyrgios’ withdrawal and came up against world No. 14 Cameron Norrie.

Despite his brave efforts, the 23-year-old fell to his opponent 6-3 6-3 in a straight sets affair.

Unfortunately for the home fans in attendance, the British dominance continued when Katie Swan defeated Zoe Hives 6-4 6-3.

Swan made the most of her break point opportunities (6/8) to claim a relatively efficient victory.

Thursday’s results mean Australia must win all three of their Friday night matches if they want to emerge from the tie victorious.

Inglis will first take on Dart before Jason Kubler looks to make the most of his call-up when he faces Daniel Evans.

Sam Stosur and John Peers will then suit up for the green and gold in a potential doubles decider against Dart and Evans.
