As if losing last month’s WBBL final wasn’t enough, the Sydney Sixers are now on the back foot for the start of next season’s competition after skipper Ellyse Perry was suspended for slow over rates.
Perry will miss the opening game of WBBL|09 after she accepted a ban for repeated infringements throughout the season.
She had received two strikes earlier in the competition and paid the price for a slow over rate in the loss to the Adelaide Strikers in the final at North Sydney Oval.
The Sixers were adjudged to have been one over behind the required rate, with no extenuating circumstances during Adelaide’s innings.
It was a bizarre evening, with the run chase delayed by roughly 15 minutes because the batters were blinded by the setting sun.
Perry’s ban does not affect Australia’s upcoming series in India.
“Match officials found the Sixers to be one over behind the expected over rate after allowances,” a statement read.
“As this was Perry’s third strike during Weber WBBL|08, a one-match suspension has been applied, to be served during her next WBBL match.
“The Sydney Sixers have accepted the penalty.”
