England hold on against Australia in high-scoring T20 clash

England have held on for a nine-run victory in Sunday night’s T20 against Australia, with two Sydney Thunder stars shining with the bat.

The visitors – who will go into this month’s World Cup as one of Australia’s main dangers – got off to a flyer, putting on 132 runs for their first-wicket partnership.

Alex Hales (84) belted 12 fours and three sixes as he top-scored for England, while captain Jos Buttler (68) hit four massive horns in the first innings.

The green and gold were without their front-line bowling attack for the match and it showed as England finished with a total of 6/208, with Nathan Ellis (3/20 off 4) the only Aussie bowler to finish with any semblance of decent bowling figures.

Australia would face an uphill battle in their run chase, needing over 10 runs per over – but the in-form David Warner wasn’t going to die wondering.

Warner (73) again top-scored for the hosts after showing his brilliance against the West Indies two days prior, while No.3 Mitchell Marsh (36) also chipped in with some important runs to give the Aussies some hope.

Aaron Finch (12) and Tim David (0) both failed with the stick however, which left it up to Marcus Stoinis (35) and Matthew Wade (21) to attempt to guide the Aussies home late in the piece.

But it was all done and dusted once Wade was dismissed in the final over, as the Aussies finished 9/200 from their 20 overs.

Australia and England will face off against on Wednesday and Friday, before the T20WC begins next week.
