Cain Velasquez, a former UFC heavyweight champion who previously worked for WWE, was arrested and charged with attempted murder after police said he was involved in a shooting Monday in San Jose, California.
Police said one adult male suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the incident and was transported to a local hospital. The The shooting happened at 3:14 p.m. Monday in Morgan Hill, California. NBC Bay Area was the first to report the news.
The San Jose Police media relations Twitter account identified Velasquez as the suspect on Tuesday in a tweet that included his mugshot, saying, “The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation at this time.”

According to online jail records, Velasquez was booked Monday and was being held without bail. A court date is set for this Wednesday.
Velasquez, 39, is a former Pac-10 champion in collegiate wrestling. Making his MMA debut in 2006, Velasquez joined the UFC in 2008. Going 12-3 with the promotion, Velasquez famously beat Brock Lesnar for the UFC heavyweight title in 2010. After losing it to Junior dos Santos in 2011, he regained the title in a rematch in 2012. Injuries affected his career, as he has competed only three times since 2013.
Velasquez’s last MMA fight was a KO loss in February 2019 against Francis Ngannou.
Outside of MMA, Velasquez has competed in the pro wrestling world. He has made appearances in AAA as well as WWE. He famously had a feud with Lesnar for the WWE title in 2019 and was later released in 2020. Velasquez was planning on continuing his wrestling journey this year.
