James McDonald rides two James Cummings-trained Group 1 winners at Caulfield Guineas Day

Caulfield Racecourse hosted three Group 1 races on Saturday as spring racing begins to hit its straps.

Rated a soft 5, the Caulfield track was able to produce exciting battles, particularly in the form of a thrilling finish to the Might and Power Stakes.

Anamoe (Might and Power) and Golden Mile (Caulfield Guineas) scored wins with James McDonald on board as jockey, whilst Tuvalu – ridden by Jarrod Fry – caused an upset in the Toorak Handicap.

Anamoe wins thrilling Might and Power

Sitting in fourth spot as they came around the bend, Anamoe was able to charge home to claim the Might and Power Stakes.

I’m Thunderstruck and Zaaki appeared to be dueling for the win, but narrowly missed out due to a barnstorming Anamoe.

The James Cummings-trained horse will now likely be the favourite for the Cox Plate to be run in two weeks’ time.

Golden Mile takes out Caulfield Guineas

McDonald continued his good form, picking up his second Group 1 and third race win on the day with Golden Mile in the Caulfield Guineas.

The pre-race favourite came from the middle of the pack to bolt home down the 300 metre straight.

Golden Miles’ speed around the bend was key, according to trainer Cummings.

“He’s got a great turn of foot the horse, probably won him the race today,” Cummings said on Channel 7’s broadcast.

Tuvalu causes Toorak Handicap upset

Unlike the first two Group 1s, there was an upset in the Toorak Handicap, with Tuvalu proving too strong.

The Lindsey Smith-trained gelding hovered around the $10 mark pre-race but delivered against the odds.

Gentleman Roy led as the field headed down the straight, but gradually tired and missed out on a placing.

Race favourite I Wish I Win finished in fifth.
