Melbourne Victory’s season goes from bad to worse after Luis Nani injury

Before the start of the 2022/23 A-League Men (ALM) season, Melbourne Victory were tipped by many to challenge for silverware.

But their campaign to date has been anything but successful with poor results, a pitch invasion and now a serious injury to their star player leaving their prospects looking bleak.

Marquee signing Nani was forced off in Victory’s 1-0 loss to Brisbane Roar on Friday night and subsequent scans have confirmed the former Manchester United attacker has ruptured his ACL.

The 36-year-old is now expected to miss the rest of the season and possibly the start of the next as he recovers from the serious injury.

“Our fears were confirmed after the scan results on Saturday and we’re all disappointed for Luis,” Victory coach Tony Popovic said via a club statement.

“Luis has been a big influence around the club through his leadership and experience, and he will be an incredible loss for our squad.

“The entire club will rally around Luis and will support him through his recovery.”

Victory’s latest blow comes less than a month after a violent pitch invasion in the Melbourne derby saw the club handed a show cause notice with a number of members locked out of their recent home game against the Roar.

Popovic’s side are currently second-last in the ALM, only ahead of Perth Glory on goal difference, and have lost their last three games.

What was meant to be a dream season has quickly turned into a nightmare for the Victory faithful, who have been left reeling by Nani’s injury.

Victory face Adelaide United in their next match with both clubs looking to bounce back after recent defeats.
