Naomi Osaka’s Wimbledon doubles announcement sparks Nick Kyrgios rumour

Tennis fans might witness an exciting partnership between Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios in June, with the Japanese star announcing she will be playing mixed doubles at Wimbledon.

Speaking on Sunday following her second-round loss at the Madrid Open, Osaka revealed that she will play doubles at the All England Club.

“I have been really trying to focus on my net game because I’m going to play mixed doubles in Wimbledon,” Osaka said.

“I know, shocking, right? I’m shocked too. Your eyes got super big.

“I really don’t want to disappoint the person I’m playing with, because whenever I play doubles I always say, ‘sorry’.

“I’m going to try not to be a liability.”

Osaka didn’t reveal the name of her mixed doubles partner, but Kyrgios would certainly suit the bill.

“If this person sees it and they want to respond, they can do that, but I don’t know,” she said.

“Isn’t it more fun to kind of see it when it’s around the time?

“I’m pretty sure if you wanted to guess you could guess who it is.”

Kyrgios won this year’s Australian Open men’s doubles title alongside fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Although he previously stated he won’t participate in the Wimbledon doubles draw, he didn’t specify whether that included mixed doubles or not.

Those in the tennis community were quick to speculate on who Osaka’s partner could be, with various journalists and writers touting Kyrgios as a very likely option.

In March, Kyrgios was seen training while Osaka watched on, with the former world number one admitting she’d be open to a possible mixed doubles pairing.

“If he wants to attempt to carry us, I’ll consider it,” Osaka said.

“But I haven’t played doubles in years and I’m not quite great at it.

“I know he just won the Australian Open doubles title. Yeah, if he wants to do everything…”

Kyrgios played mixed doubles with Venus Williams at the US Open in 2021, while Osaka hasn’t played competitive doubles tennis since 2017.
