After a disastrous debut season with the Broncos in 2022, Russell Wilson is trying to improve his odds to succeed next year.
After Nathaniel Hackett was fired before the end of his first season in Denver, it stood to reason the Broncos would go all-in for their next coach with a fixture at quarterback in Wilson — who reportedly buying in as well.
After watching Pete Carroll and Geno Smith traipse into the playoffs with the Seahawks while also breaking his single-season passing record, Wilson is reportedly getting involved with the Broncos’ efforts to land Sean Payton, easily the hottest coaching commodity on the market with Jim Harbaugh recommitting to Michigan. According to Colin Cowherd, Wilson reached out to Payton to bolster the Broncos’ recruiting efforts.
“The reality with Russell Wilson, most people understand the problem with Russell right now,” Cowherd said. “He’s too isolated.”
He then said: “Sean, I know, can fix it. And Russell has contacted Sean, legally by the way — through channels — he wants Sean Payton. He needs fixing. He knows he needs fixing.”
“Can Sean fix Russ? I believe the answer is yes.”

Coming off a 5-12 season, the Broncos may not seem like the most attractive job at first blush, but they had a defense that bordered on elite for most of the year and Wilson is not far removed from his good years in Seattle.
Payton is undoubtedly aware of that as he moves through the process.
If Wilson is ready to admit he “needs fixing” after last year’s debacle, that might make the job all the more appealing for someone like Payton, who paired himself with a great quarterback for 15 years in New Orleans alongside Drew Brees.
As of now, Payton is still part of the Fox crew. But with interviews with the Broncos and Texans down with one with the Panthers pending, he’s got suitors.
